Collection of personal information

It is intended that this Portal can be used anonymously.  However, for some functions of the Portal the collection of personal information is necessary or unavoidable.

You will know if the department is collecting personal information from you because you will be requested to provide it.  There are two exceptions to this.

  • The first exception is where someone else (other than EDS after collecting your personal information on behalf of the department) provides the department with your personal information. The department cannot prevent this.  However, you are entitled to access and correct any personal information about you collected by the department.
  • The second exception is where the department collects statistics of Portal usage by analysing web server log files.  Such statistics may qualify as personal information under the Information Privacy Act 2000 (Vic.).  However, these statistics are not used to identify individual users of the Portal.

Internet use risks

You should be aware that there are risks in transmitting information across the Internet. However, the department takes reasonable steps to protect any personal information from unauthorised access once that personal information comes into its possession.

Visitor information

Visitor logs and cookies are used to gather statistical information about the use of this Portal. These tools provide the department with general data including number of visits, pages viewed, browser type, how the site is navigated, sections of the Portal visited and other Portal usage information - without identifying individual users.  No attempt will be made to identify you or your browsing activity.  This information will only be used to update and improve the site.

A cookie is a small piece of information (a text file) that a web server can place temporarily on your hard drive or web browser.  It is used by your browser to identify the pages that you have visited on our site.  A cookie is uniquely yours and can only be read by the server that gave it to you.  Note that the Cookie will remain on your computer as a record for future visits to this Portal.

In using cookies, the department does not record any personal information, collect names or details of commercial transactions.  You can configure your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, providing you with the opportunity to either accept or reject it.  You can also refuse all cookies by turning them off in your browser, or delete all cookies from your computer if required.

The department uses standard web analytics software packages to analyse its web server log files to track Portal usage.  "Clickstream" data is gathered when monitoring computer browsers in relation to the path Portal visitors take while moving within the Portal. In this instance, individuals are not identified only unique browsers.
